Preface
The International Meeting of the Psychometric Society (IMPS2001) was held July 15-19,2001, at the Osaka University Convention Center, Osaka, Japan. The meeting was the successor to the 11th European Meeting of the Psychometric Society held at Lueneburg, Germany, in 1999, and is a part of the long history of the Psychometric Society, which was established in 1936. It is significant that the IMPS2001 was the first meeting of the Psychometric Society held outside North America or Europe, and it was also the first meeting of the Psychometric Society designated as international. Our expectations were modest, but we were very happy to host 313 participants from 19 countries around the world although the meeting was held in Japan, far from most of those countries. The IMPS200 1 was organized under the auspices of the Psychometric Society and the Organizing Committee of the IMPS200 1. It was co-sponsored by the Behaviormetric Society of Japan, the Japan Statistical Society, the Japanese Psychological Association, and the faculty of Human Sciences of Osaka University, with the support of28 cooperative societies in Japan. Further, we would like to acknowledge the Commemorative Association for the Japan World Exposition (1970), and the 26 other organizations whose financial assistance enabled us to publish this volume of conference proceedings. The science program comprised 2 keynote lectures, 10 invited lectures, 5 symposia, 20 invited sessions, 13 contributed sessions, and 6 poster sessions. The details of the program can be found in the December issue of Psychometrika, 2001, pp. 599-608. In all, nearly 250 presentations were delivered. We estimate that both the
number of presentations and the number of participants were the largest among the meetings of the Psychometric Society so far. We are grateful to a number of the past presidents of the society for the success of this meeting. Of those, we
