Abbreviations

Works by Montaigne All quotations from the Essais of Montaigne are cited by book number (I, II, or III) and chapter number, followed by two page numbers. The first refers to the French edition by Pierre Villey, revised by Verdun-L. Saulnier (Paris: Presses Universitaires de France, 1965, “Quadrige” 1992). The second refers to the English version that appears in Michel de Montaigne: The Complete Works, translated by Donald Frame (New York: Knopf, 2003). I have generally adopted Frame’s renderings, while modifying them in a few instances. The letters “[A],” “[B],” and “[C]” indicate the three main strata of the text of the Essais. Quoted text that follows the stratum indicator “[A]” appeared in the work’s first edition, published in 1580. Quoted text following “[B]” first appeared in the 1588 edition of the Essais; quoted text followed by “[C]” was added after the 1588 edition. When I quote from Book I or Book II of the Essais with no accompanying stratum indicator, the text is from the [A]-stratum. All quotations from Book III without an accompanying stratum indicator are from the [B]-stratum.
