Summary. Erycibe schmidtii Craib is lectotypified with notes and photographs. Erycibe stapfiana Prain, a new species record from South-Western Thailand, is also provided with a description, photographs and notes. Key Words. Kaeng Krachan, Koh Chang, liana, new record, taxonomy, typification.
Introduction Erycibe Roxb. is a tropical South-East Asian genus in the Convolvulaceae with c. 72 species (Hoogland 1953a, 1953c; Staples 2010; Syahida-Emiza 2012; Staples et al. 2014; Staples & Syahida-Emiza 2015; Dang et al. 2016). Almost all species are woody lianas, but six species are trees or treelets. Important diagnostic characters for the genus are the presence of a deeply lobed corolla, hairs densely covering the abaxial midpetaline bands, and the absence of a style. The genus was recently placed in the monotypic tribe Erycibeae (Endl.) Hall.f., distinct because of the sessile stigma (Stefanović et al. 2003). During ongoing monographic and phylogenetic studies of the genus by the authors, two problematic taxonomic issues, left somewhat ambiguous in recent treatments, have been resolved and are elucidated here. Craib (in Schmidt 1916) described Erycibe schmidtii Craib based on a collection from Koh Chang, an island in the east of the Gulf of Thailand, but he did not designate where the type material was deposited. To date, the type has been only known from the fragmentary specimen in K which Hoogland (1953b) defined as isotype, but the location of any holotype material remained unanswered (Hoogland 1953b; Staples 2010). Recent study has rediscovered a spirit specimen held in the collection of the Natural History Museum of Denmark (C), allowing for formal lectotypification of this taxon. The comprehensive revision of Erycibe in Thailand was undertaken by Staples (2010), with ten species formally reported for the Flora of Thailand, but with a possible further 12 species suggested to occur in
Thailand because they are native to Peninsular Malaysia (Hoogland 1953c; Staples 2010). In 2004, a specimen from Phraek Ta Khraw waterfall, Prachuap Khiri Khan Province was subsequently identified as E. stapfiana Prain, and this is the first confirmed record of an additional Malaysian Erycibe species in Thailand, confirming the suggestion of additional species by Staples (2010). The species is described here and an update to the key to species in the Flora of Thailand is presented here.
