ABSTRACT The paper describes a novel method of exfoliated graphite synthesis. The method includes synthesis of graphite intercalation compound in liquid ammonia medium and subsequent intercalate decomposition with graphite exfoliation. Influence of the experimental parameters on the morphology and structure of the exfoliated graphite is shown. Comparison of the developed exfoliation method to the high-temperature oxidation-reduction method used in industrial scale nowadays is presented. A number of application areas for the synthesized exfoliated graphite are described. INTRODUCTION Exfoliated graphite is a carbon nanomaterial akin to graphene and graphene oxide and hence, it is characterized by similar properties and application areas. Exfoliated graphite can be synthesized in the form of powder or bulk porous structure. Each particle of exfoliated graphite powder consists of a few atomic-thick graphene layers. Exfoliated graphite can be used as filler for composites on the base of polymers, ceramics, and metals, as a component of conductive inks, battery and supercapacitor electrodes, sorbents. Exfoliated graphite can also be used as a precursor for graphene synthesis by its further chemical or mechanical exfoliation and separation. In general, exfoliated graphite synthesis technology includes three stages: synthesis of graphite intercalation compound, its decomposition leading to crystal exfoliation into thin layers, further processing with the aim of chemical purification and reduction of the concentration of structural defects. The synthesis method realized on industrial scale nowadays consists in graphite flakes treatment with a mixture of concentrated acids and oxidizers, washing (hydrolysis), thermal shock of the intercalation compound leading to crystal exfoliation, further treatment including washing, reduction, and annealing [1, 2]. However, the method possesses a number of significant disadvantages includ
