PREFACE THE S.E.R.C. NUMERICAL ANALYSIS SUMMER SCHOOL University of Lancaster 15th July - 3rd August, 1984 The aims of this second Numerical Analysis Summer School were much the same as for the inaugural event in 1981 - LNM 965 describes the proceedings of the first one - although the organizational structure was altered. was essentially self-contained.
Each week of this conference
During each week there was provision for intensive
study, which could broaden participant.s' research interests or deepen their understanding of t.opics with which they already had some familiarity, and for cont.inuing individual research in the stimulating environment created by the gathering toget.her of several experts of international renown. This volume contains lect.ure Hates for most of the main courses of lectures given at the meeting.
Each week there was one ten-lecture course, a relat.ed course
of five lect.ures and a programme of research seminars given by furt.her invited speakers or other participants.
The one week for which lecture notes are not
included is that on Multigrid Methods.
The courses in that week were based on
material which has appeared in W. Hackbusch and U. Trottenberg Ceds) Mult.igrid Met.hods, LNM 960, Springer-Verlag, Heidelberg, 1984. the papers of Hackbusch and Brandt are included here.

Guide" is updated annually and is available as a GMD monograph. Present.ed here then is an account of the proceedings of a very successful and well-att.ended second meeting in what it is hoped will become a regular series of Numerical Analysis Summer Schools at Lancaster.
