FOREWORD
The Workshop on Numerical Methods was held at Hotel Avila, Caracas, Venezuela, June 14-18, 1982. It was quite a successful sequel to two smaller meetings held in Caracas in 1974 and 1980, and to three meetings held in the past years in Mexico ($ee these Lecture Notes Vol. 909 for the Proceedings of the 1981 Meeting in Cocoyoc, Mexico). The present workshop was attended by 25 foreign and about 50 local scientists. We had a good group from the US, and representatives from Brasil, Canada, England, Mexico, and Sweden. The scientific program consisted of thirteen forty-five and sixteen twenty-five minutes invited talks, and some contributed posters. There was an ample spectrum of papers, with the central theme of scientific computation in ordinary and partial differential equations, optimization, and engineering applications. We would like to thank most specially to our institutions, Universidad Central de Venezuela (UCV) and Universidad Simon Bolivar (USB) for their support in this endeavor, and to the sponsors that made it financially possible: Conicit, IDEA (Venezuela), NSF (USA).the Embassies of France and Sweden and the British Council. Last but not least, we thank the tireless efforts of our colleagues in the Organizing Commitee: Marianela Lentini (Coordinator, USB, Venezuela), Gene H. Golub (Coordinator, Stanford University, USA), Javier Maguregui (USB), Consuelo Maulino (UCV), and Godela Scherer (USB). Caracas, November 1982.
