Abstract—Lectotypes of Tyloderes nebulosus Motschulsky, 1860, Dermatodes interstitialis Motschulsky, 1866, and Cneorhinus angusticollis Motschulsky, 1866 are designated. New combinations and new synonymies are established: Catapionus nebulosus (Motschulsky, 1860), comb. n. (= Dermatodes interstitialis Motschulsky, 1866, syn. n., = Catapionus gracilicornis Roelofs, 1873, syn. n., = Catapionus subcostatus Formánek, 1922, syn. n.); Dactylotus angusticollis (Motschulsky, 1866), comb. n. (= Blosyrus falcatus Faust, 1882, syn. n., = Blosyrus japonicus Sharp, 1896, syn. n.). The subgenus Nipponoblosyrus Korotyaev, 1996, stat. res. is restored from synonymy and returned to the genus Dactylotus Schoenherr, 1847. Keywords: Curculionidae, Catapionus, Dactylotus, Blosyrus, Nipponoblosyrus, synonymy, Japan DOI: 10.1134/S0013873820040132
V.I. Motschulsky published two papers on the insect fauna of Japan (Motschulsky, 1860, 1866), in which he described 12 species of weevils (Curculionidae) whose types are kept at the Zoological Museum of Lomonosov Moscow State University (ZMMU). Some of them, in particular Tyloderes nebulosus Motschulsky, 1860, Dermatodes interstitialis Motschulsky, 1866, and Cneorhinus angusticollis Motschulsky, 1866, are still listed as incertae sedis in catalogues and taxonomic reviews (Lona, 1938; Magnano and Alonso-Zarazaga, 2013; Morimoto et al., 2015; Alonso-Zarazaga et al., 2017).
V.I. Motschulsky obtained the material of Japanese insects from Elizaveta Stepanovna Goshkevich (1821– 1864), the wife of Iosif Antonovich Goshkevich (1814– 1875), a prominent linguist, Orientalist, and diplomat who in 1858–1865 was the first consul of the Russian Empire in Japan. E.S. Goshkevich was able to collect insects for several years in the environs of the town of Hakodate (the Oshima Peninsula in the south of Hokkaido Island), where the Russian Consulate was located; besides, in 1858 she could also make collections in the north of Honshu Island during her journey from the Shogun’s residence in Edo (the modern Tokyo) to the Tsugaru Strait. V.I. Motschulsky received the Japanese collection material from E.S. Goshkevich at least twice (Motschulsky, 1860, 1866). Thus, the species described in his first paper (Motschulsky, 1860) could have been collected both in the Hakodate area and in the north of Honshu, while those described in his second paper (Motschulsky, 1866) had been collected only in the environs of Hakodate.
This paper continues a series of publications devoted to the results of my study of V.I. Motschulsky’s collection (Savitsky, 2018). Here I designate the lectotypes of Tyloderes nebulosus, Dermatodes interstitialis, and Cneorhinus angusticollis, specif
