Opioid overdose during or after treatment with naltrexone In patients treated with extended-release naltrexone [XR-NTX] injectable suspension, the opioid overdose reporting rate is similar during treatment and after discontinuation, according to study results reported in Drug Safety, and rates were 56 days from the last dose. The median event latency was about 32 days. Of the serious cases, 22 occurred >56 days from the last dose, included 20 of the fatal cases, which the authors note "likely reflect OUD [opioid use disorder] event rates in an untreated population, which are reported to be greater than those for patients receiving medication for OUD". "With the ongoing rise in opioid overdose rates in the USA", conclude the authors, "further research is needed to characterize mortality risk during and following treatment with XR-NTX and other medications used to treat OUD and to identify methods that improve treatment retention and thereby mitigate the opioid overdose risk associated with untreated OUD".
