Oxaliplatin Skin eruptions: case report A 43-year-old man developed a generalised, urticarial skin eruption following treatment with an oxaliplatin-containing antineoplastic regimen for metastatic rectal adenocarcinoma. The man started receiving oxaliplatin 85 mg/m2, folinic acid [leucovorin] and fluorouracil every 2 weeks. Three hours after his first infusion, a generalised, urticarial, pruritic skin eruption appeared. He received antihistamines and his skin eruption rapidly resolved. Within 3 hours of his second infusion, he developed another skin eruption. He received prednisone and diphenhydramine [Benadryl]. A desensitisation protocol was developed for the third oxaliplatin infusion. Oxaliplatin was started at 1:10 000 of the prescribed dose, followed by a doubling of subsequent doses, until he had received a cumulative dose of 175mg. He tolerated the desensitisation protocol, and all subsequent oxaliplatin infusions were administered following this protocol. He received a total of 13 antineoplastic cycles and he was in clinical tumour remission at follow-up. Edmondson DA, et al.
