Neutropenia in an elderly patient: case report An 82-year-old woman started receiving pantoprazole 40 mg twice daily [route not stated] for gastric ulcers secondary to Stevens Johnson syndrome. Three days later, her WBC and absolute neutrophil count decreased to 2.66 × 109/L and 0.5 × 109/L, respectively. Pantoprazole was discontinued and her WBC and absolute neutrophil count recovered the following day. She was re-challenged with pantoprazole and her WBC and absolute neutrophil count again decreased; both levels normalised after pantoprazole discontinuation. Author comment: "The Naranjo probability scale yielded a score of 9 meaning that there is a "definite" probability pantoprazole was the cause of this adverse drug reaction." Cascetta K, et al.
