Abstract
According to narratology or narrative theory, a piece of artwork should tell a story based on its various tensions. In this study, an automated music composition algorithm using musical tension energy was proposed; this algorithm can generate a musical piece by changing the musical tension. The proposed innovative Algorithmic Composition Musical Tension Energy (ACMTE) method uses the level of musical tension; this level is determined primarily by the chord progression and also the musical parameters of pitch interval and rhythm. The effects of musical tension energy on those parameters were analyzed. This paper presents a formula that unifies all generated parts. The experimental results demonstrate that thousands of beautiful pieces can easily be made without the use of a music database. This algorithmic composition method can be easily applied in both streaming media and to portable music devices, such as smart phones, notebooks, and MP3 players. Keywords Narratology . 1 Introduction Sound is a mechanical wave [21, 35], and scholars have described music in terms of mathematics [3, 16]. The power of a given sound is determined by the amplitude of its wave. Because sound has power, and music is sound, music has power. According to scholars in the field of psychoacoustics [24, 29], music induces different sensations through inducing different soul energies. Tzvetan Todorov coined the term “narratology” which is sometimes called narrative theory [31]; it includes fields involving drama, texts, literature, poetry, games, movies, and music [26]. terms of artistic structures that affect audience perceptions. In particular, interpretations can be based on levels of narrative tension—such as exposition, conflict, climax, and denouement. Figure 1 illustrates a narrative tension model. Music composition based on narrative theory involves alternating between or among independently developing musical successions; in doing so, a disjunction between normal musical processes and musical narrative is created [19]. Musical tension is a crucial element in music, from its composition [14] to perception [9]. According to its narrative tension, a musical composition can be expressed based on musical tension energy levels [30].
