Abstract This paper proposes genetic algorithm combining operation tree (GAOT) and applies it to estimate the bacillariophyta algae of Techi reservoir using Landsat 8 data. GAOT is a data mining method, used to automatically discover the relationships among nonlinear systems. The main advantage of GAOT is to optimize appropriate types of function and their associated coefficients simultaneously. In the case study, this GAOT described above combining with Landsat 8 seven bands was employed. These results are then verified with in situ algae data of Techi reservoir. The results show that the GAOT generates accurate equation and has better performance than linear regression method. practical method that has earned significant attention in terms of its ability to model nonlinear relationships between inputs and outputs when physical models cannot be defined in advance. It consists of genetic algorithms (GA) and operation trees (OT). Operation tree is a tree structure, which plays the architecture to represent an explicit formula. Genetic algorithm is one of optimization paradigms about mimicking the natural evolution mechanism, which plays the optimization mechanism to optimize the operation tree to fit data in the genetic algorithm combining operation tree process (Hsu et al. 2013). In recent years, researches has been applied genetic algorithm combining operation tree in different field such as concrete field and water quality field (Lien et al. 2006; Peng et al. 2010; Yeh et al. 2010; Lin 2012; Chen et al. 2012; Hsu et al. 2013;). Alabbadi et al. (2012) used genetic algorithm combining operation tree to estimate typhoon rainfall over ocean using multi-variable meteorological satellite data.
