PREFACE

By 1947, when Quick, a weekly news magazine, selected Carson McCullers as “one of the best postwar writers in America” (qtd. in Carr 294), she had already found success with The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter (1940) and Reflections in a Golden Eye (1941), published several short stories and novellas including The Ballad of the Sad Café (1943), and had received wide critical acclaim for The Member of the Wedding (1946), a novel that she would soon adapt into a successful Broadway production. Around the same time, Gore Vidal declared McCullers “the best American woman novelist” (qtd. in Rodwan).
