Existential Quality of Life Scales Definition These QOL scales are characterized by a greater emphasis on ‘‘existential’’ issues than physical domains (which characterize Health-Related QOL scales). They have been considered of particular use in capturing QOL in chronic disorders, in which factors such as spiritual, supportive and psychological aspects of life, not captured in HR-QOL scales, play an important role.
Expanded Disability Status Scale Definition EDSS is the most widely used instrument for the assessment of disability in patients affected by MS. It is useful for evaluating physical aspects of MS but has been criticized for not capturing the overall impact of MS that includes the multiple dimensions of QOL. The scale is composed of eight subscales, each measuring a specific function within the central nervous system. Each subscale ranges from 0 to 6, where 0 is normal and 6 is maximal impairment. The EDSS is an index of MS severity ranging from 0 (normal) to 10 (death).
Expanded Program on Immunization Definition The Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) was designed and implemented by the World Health Organization in late 1970s to improve vaccine coverage through community participation. Routine immunization program, which was organized to fully immunize children against polio, tetanus,
diphtheria, pertussis and measles, is the most important activity of EPI.
Expert Group Decision-Making Processes Definition In the Global Burden of Disease studies, expert groups were comprised of health practitioners and researchers knowledgeable about the epidemiology of disease states and injury conditions. The decision-making process used by these groups to establish disability weightings involved a Person Trade-Off exercise.
Exploratory Factor Analysis Definition A theory-generating procedure that seeks to uncover the underlying structure of a set of variables. The prior assumption is that any indicator may be associated with any factor and factor loadings are used to determine the nature of factors that account for the correlation between variables.
Extra-Housing Factors Synonyms Non-Housing Factors Definition Extra-Housing Factors include other important dimensions that contribute to one’s QOL, including the neighborhood in which one lives and one’s relationships with social network members.
