PREVENTION of oxide formation on the surface oxide of aluminum is extremely difficult due to the high oxygen affinity of aluminum.[1] If the partial pressure of oxygen (PO2 ) exceeds 1040 to 1035 kPa, oxide forms easily according to the following equation for the standard Gibbs free energy (DG, J/mol) and covers the surface of aluminum:[2–5] 4AlðsÞ þ 3O2ðgÞ ¼ 2Al2 O3ðsÞ ½for 298 K (25  C)
