Any analysis of the geography of innovation across the globe tends to find an inherent spatial unevenness in the distribution of inputs, outputs and outcomes, especially with regard to innovation that can be depicted as disruptive and radically market changing. Such unevenness is particularly pronounced when examining urban innovation geographies. While some cities act as powerful engines and motors of innovation, many others lag and are marked by an embedded and ingrained culture, infrastructure and industrial structure that works against the generation of the forms of innovation communities that propel knowledge-based economic development.
