This is a literary biography of the English writer Herbert George Wells, and its emphasis is, by design, more on the literary than the biographical. The latter forms the spine of the book, and what follows provides, I hope, a reasonably thorough-going account of Wells’s life. But my focus is on what Wells wrote, in both fiction and non-fiction. I make no claims to have uncovered any new material about Wells’s actual life.
