To my husband and daughters who have shown great patience with my distraction while editing this book.

Preface

My coauthors and I are happy to bring you this inaugural textbook on high-risk cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma. We feel it is timely in that many advances in defining this entity have occurred in recent years and we’re witnessing the beginning of the serious study of this historically understudied disease. If any subsequent editions of this text are released, they will almost certainly contain important advances in prognostic stratification, our understanding of the molecular and genetic underpinnings of aggressive tumor formation and progression, accurate disease staging, and even treatment. Although the study of high-risk cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma is in its infancy, it will not remain there for long. Many distinguished investigators, many of whom are authors of this book, are hard at work to bring new information to light that will ultimately benefit patients who suffer from this difficult disease. Meanwhile, we hope that you will find this a useful compendium of current knowledge. Boston, MA, USA
