The series of workshops on Machine Learning for Multimodal Interaction (MLMI) celebrates this year its fifth anniversary. On this occasion, a number of innovations have been introduced in the reviewing and publication procedures, while keeping the focus on the same scientific topics. For the first time, the reviewing process has been adapted in order to prepare the proceedings in time for the workshop, held on September 8–10, 2008, in Utrecht, The Netherlands. The
