Authors’ Note
It’s been four years since the 2006 publication of the first edition of ‘Mastering Your PhD: Survival and Success in the Doctoral Years and Beyond’. In the meantime we’ve written quite a bit of new material. Some of it appeared as a monthly column on the ScienceCareers.org website, and some of it consists of additional tips and advice we thought would be of value to fledgling PhD students and those who are further along the road. With several new chapters of material and many new insights to help you along the way, we hope you enjoy this second edition. Best of luck on your journey. September 2010

Hopefully it will help graduate students get the most out of (an
