For many Brexit is equated with division, contention and discord—yet it can also tell us a great deal about human nature and human morality. For ‘Leavers’ and ‘Remainers’ alike a study of the metaphors of Brexit may contribute to a better understanding of the language and moral thought of British people in the earlier part of the twenty-first century. The outcome of the 2016 Referendum shocked most commentators since economists and other experts had warned against leaving the European Union after 43 years of membership and very few pollsters had predicted that they would. The decision to leave originated in a gut reaction against ‘Brussels’ among a majority rather than, perhaps, in a fully rounded assessment of the national interest. Yet should we have been so surprised? There is an increasing amount of research that shows that human decisions are often not rational and are made on the basis of moral and emotional judgements rooted in intuition: in ‘heart’ rather than ‘head’.
