MRS Establishes Affiliated Organization Program Goal is to Poster Closer Interactions with Specialized Groups The Materials Research Society has announced a new program designed to facilitate interactions between MRS and other technical or educational groups with mutual materials interests. Developed by the MRS External Affairs Subcommittee on Domestic Activities and approved by MRS Council at its last fall meeting, the program establishes a category titled "Affiliated Organization" for groups participating in the program. "The purpose of MRS," states Gordon Pike, one of the architects of the program, "is to provide a comprehensive forum for the description and discussion of forefront materials research in many topical areas by deliberately integrating the work from multiple disciplines and fields of specialization. And to do this effectively," he points out, "the Society has been searching for ways to foster interaction with pertinent communities." "We also recognize that specialized organizations may hâve a désire to be in communication with broader organizations in

materials, such as MRS," says Pike. "The Affiliated Organization category has been established as a mechanism to accomplish fruitful exchanges of information and coopération between MRS and thèse specialized groups." The Affiliated Organization program recognizes that many kinds of groups exist which would benefit from participation. Sometimes thèse organizations take the form of periodic meetings propagated by a continuing steering committee. In other cases, the more formai structure of a membership society has been adopted to provide more extensive services or activities. And still other associations exist to advance régional affinities or interests in broad related subjects such as materials éducation. Both MRS and the Affiliated Organizations will benefit from the exchange of information about meetings, publications, and spécial projects. In some cases, additional coopérative activities may eventually develop through the affiliation, involving

such areas as publications, symposia, short courses, or headquarters administrative assistance. MRS invites organizations to consider participating as an MRS Affiliated Organization. This category is open to nonprofit organizations which are active primarily in the United States or which hâve an international character but hold technical meetings periodically in the United States. Eligible organizations must currently hâve activities in the areas of materials research or éducation and must hâve demonstrated a continuing organizational structure over a period of at least three years. Organizations incur no cost to affiliate. "AU they need to bring with them," Pike emphasizes, "is a désire to improve communications."
