ON THE SOCIOLOGY OF INTERNATIONAL LAW AND INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY The sociology of international relations occupied an important place at the Sixth World Congress ofSociology, held in September 1966 in Evian, France. This relatively new branch ofsociology can be viewed as the application of sociological methods to international relations, particularly those in the non-governmental sphere, or as an attempt to view world-society as a whole in terms of a structural sociological approach. The author chooses the second method in this book as he deerns it essential that we should have a perspective on world-society as such before we can deal in a constructive fashion with more specific studies. In the ever-widening field of the study of international relations sociological theory may be able to fulfill a comparable function with the one it had in regard to national societies: to create a certain awareness of the interrelatedness of the social groups which can be regarded as the social centres in world-society. In this fashion it may supplement the thinking of international law and ofpolitical science.
