Pain Definition The complex anatomical, physiological, and emotional phenomenon resulting from either actual or perceived noxious external or internal stimuli. Pain is conventionally categorized as being somatic, visceral, neuropathic, or psychogenic.
Pain Catastrophizing Definition Pain Catastrophizing is defined as a negative mental set manifest during the experience of pain. It has been measured by three associated components: rumination (e.g., ‘‘I can’t stop thinking about the pain’’), magnification (e.g., ‘‘This is the worst thing imaginable’’) and helplessness (e.g., ‘‘There’s nothing I can do to stop the pain’’). Catastrophizing has been repeatedly associated with a range of negative pain outcomes across clinical and experimental samples.
Pain Management Index Definition The Pain Management Index (PMI) is explained as a way to quantify how well pain is managed with pharmacological intervention (0 = no analgesia, 1 = non-opioid analgesia 2 = a mild opioid, 3 = a strong opioid). PMI is calculated by subtracting the pain level reported by the patient from the type of analgesic treatment, the score ranging from - 3 (non-analgesia therapy patient with
severe pain) to + 3 (morphine therapy patients with no pain).
Palliative Definition Offering symptomatic relief and comfort care rather than a cure.
Pancreas Exocrine Secretions Definition In addition to its endocrine role, the pancreas also makes digestive juices (exocrine secretions), and management of these digestive juices can significantly complicate the surgical course of a pancreas transplant.
Pancreas Transplantation Definition Major operation in which a donor pancreas is sewn into the recipient blood vessels. This pancreas will produce insulin and restore normal glucose metabolism.
