Abstract Magnetic electrospun recycled polyester mat was made from a bath sonicated solution containing recycled polyester and magnetite nanoparticles (Fe3O4 NPs) through electrospinning. The recycled polyester was used instead of virgin one considering the environmental conservation and economy issues. The magnetic electrospun recycled polyester mat was prepared with 35 nm magnetite nanoparticles synthesized through the precipitation method. Field emission-scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), X-Ray diffraction (XRD) and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) were used to study the morphology of the surface, crystalline structure and magnetic properties. The photo and bio activities of magnetic electrospun recycled polyester mat were improved comparing with electrospun recycled polyester mat. Magnetic electrospun mat showed the magnetic properties for easily removal of mat from the solution. The magnetic electrospun mat produced with 5% magnetite nanoparticles was effective for the bacteria reduction greater than 99% against E. coli. Introduction Iron derivatives nanoparticles have various applications in many important industrial fields [1–3] such as chemicals [4] and biological treatments [5]. Magnetite nanoparticles catalyze the decomposition of a wide range of chemicals such as organic pollutants [5]. The magnetic property of magnetite nanoparticles can be a good feature for photocatalytic area [6] in various applications of photochemical and photobiological processes [7, 8]. Since the separation of the nanoparticles from the suspension is the main challenge for the process scaling, the use of magnetic electrospun recycled polyester mat as a suitable substrate can be effective due to easily removal from the remaining solution. Catalysis under the light irradiation is called photocatalysis as the possible converting solar energy into semiconductor or sensitizers [9–11]. It is recognized that the main aspects of controlling a photocatalytic reaction are the optical absorption performance of semiconductors and the * Majid Montazer [email protected] 1

migration of the electrons and light-induced holes. These aspects are relevant to the electronic structure of the materials [12]. Sonophotocatalysis is a type of photocatalysis by ultrasonic irradiation that can be caused by simultaneous periodic ultrasonic and light irradiation. Surface cleaning, particle size reduction and mass transfer result from the mechanical effects of ultrasound [12–14]. The effects of ultrasonic irradiation on the photochemical r
