In Memoriam Norman L. Peterson, Head of the Department of M e t a l l u r g y and M i n i n g Engineering at the University of Illinois, Urbana, died suddenly on A p r i l 17,1 986. A Union Carbide fellow at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, he had BSc, MSc, and DSc degrees in metall u r g y . F r o m 1961 to 1985, he was employed at Argonne National Laborat o r y , rising to senior metallurgist and earning a w o r l d w i d e reputation f o r his studies of diffusion in solids. He also served as associate d i r e c t o r of t h e Materials Science Division in charge of basic research for nine years, after which he returned to research and headed the Basic C e r a m i c s G r o u p at A r g o n n e . D u r i n g his distinguished career, he was awarded Ford F o u n d a t i o n , N a t i o n a l Science Foundation, and Humboldt fellowships, and was a f r e q u e n t visitor at E u r o p e a n s c i e n t i f i c i n s t i t u t i o n s . In November 1985 Peterson joined the University of Illinois to become Head of the D e p a r t m e n t o f M e t a l l u r g y and M i n i n g Engineering and to develop a Department of Materials Science.
