Cross-border conflicts are common and generally known the world over, but those involving the traditional territories of Iran have received little attention. These include the Caspian Sea’s legal regime in the north; the sovereignty of both Great and Little Tunb and Abu Musa Islands in the Persian Gulf; the use of the Hirmand River’s water in the east; and the bloody war with Iraq (1980–1988) over maritime boundaries in the Arvand River.
