INTRODUCTION

PREVIOUSstudies

of the light rare-earth gallium (R-Ga) systems have shown ~'2 that a wide range of solid solubility of Ga exists in RGa2 up to about 80 pct Ga. The structure of this phase, designated as e, is of the hexagonal, A1B2 type. In the heavy lanthanides only stoichiometric Rr Ga2~l+x)exists, i.e., x = 0. In addition, a RGa6 phase, ~, has been discovered, 3 which has a tetragonal PuGa6 type structure. This phase is common without exception to all the R-Ga binary systems that were investigated.
