u s e of r o l l i n g t e x t u r e to obtain e n h a n c e m e n t of d e s i r e d p r o p e r t i e s i s an i m p o r t a n t technique in m a t e r i a l d e s i g n J '2 A r a p i d m e a s u r e m e n t of the type and d e g r e e of t e x t u r e in the e n v i r o n m e n t of a r o l l i n g m i l l would b e v e r y helpful f o r the d e v e l o p m e n t of the a l l o y s , d u r i n g the r o l l i n g p r o c e d u r e s f o r t e x t u r e i m p r o v e d s h e e t , p l a t e s , and t u b e s , and for quality a s s u r a n c e of the m a n u f a c t u r e d p r o d u c t . The m o s t d i r e c t and w e l l e s t a b l i s h e d a p p r o a c h f o r a c c o m p l i s h i n g this i n v o l v e s the u s e of X - r a y t e c h n i q u e s , but t h e s e a r e c u m b e r s o m e and t i m e - c o n s u m i n g and m a y not b e f e a s i b l e on the p r o d u c t i o n f l o o r of a manufacturing f a c i l i t y . F u r t h e r m o r e , the l a r g e a m o u n t of d e t a i l e d , q u a n t i t a t i v e i n f o r m a t i o n about the t e x t u r e that an X - r a y p o l e f i g u r e y i e l d s m a y not r e a l l y b e n e e d e d when a s i m p l e c o r r e l a t i o n b e t w e e n the i m p o r t a n t m e c h a n i c a l p r o p e r t y and s o m e t e x t u r e s e n s i t i v e p h y s i c a l p r o p e r t y would be sufficient. The a n i s o t r o p y in e l a s t i c p r o p e r t i e s that a t e x t u r e i n t r o d u c e s i s c o n s i d e r e d h e r e a s a s u i t a b l y s e n s i t i v e p r o p e r t y b e c a u s e i t can be m e a s u r e d by u l t r a s o n i c w a v e s in a r a p i d , n o n d e s t r u c t i v e m a n n e r and can b e s e m i q u a n t i t a t i v e l y r e l a t e d to X - r a y p o l e figure data. The c o r r e l a t i o n b e t w e e n e l a s t i c i t y and t e x t u r e w a s f i r s t a d d r e s s e d a l r e a d y long ago 3 in t e r m s of a s i m p l e m a t h e m a t i c a l m o d e l involving Y o u n g ' s m o d u l u s . Since then the s u b j e c t h a s been c o n s i d e r e d in many r e p o r t s , ~-7 p r i m a r i l y in t e r m s of bulk e l a s t i c w a v e s , and m o s t of the s h o r t c o m i n g s of the f i r s t m o d e l have b e e n eliminated. 8 In a r e c e n t c o m m u n i c a t i o n , 9 a p r e l i m i n a r y d e s c r i p tion of a s i m p l e , r a p i d m e t h o d f o r the n o n d e s t r u c t i v e e v a l u a t i o n of t e x t u r e in m e t a l s h e e t of a r b i t r a r y t h i c k n e s s w a s given. The m e t h o d u s e d a r e c e n t l y d e v e l o p e d i m p u l s e technique ~~ to g e n e r a t e and r e c e i v e R a y l e i g h w a v e s on thick p l a t e s o r L a m b w a v e s on thin m a t e r i a l s . T h e p r e s e n t p a p e r e m p h a s i z e s the a p p l i c a tion of the technique to a v a r i e t y of commercially imp o r t a n t m a t e r i a l s and g e o m e t r i e s .
