I am not very clear on when the idea for this book began, and hence it is difficult to acknowledge everyone who has played a part in its conception. I do know that without the numerous feminist friends and colleagues that I have debated and discussed things with over the years it would never have been written. I first began thinking and writing on reproductive health as a postgraduate student, and the many pleasurable evenings spent in Queensland Avenue with Gilma Madrid, Marianna Tortell, Shraddha Chigateri, Antje Lindenmeyer, and so many others gave me both intellectual and emotional support as a fledgling academic. Geraldine Brady and I met on the first day of our undergraduate degrees and our ongoing friendship has led to a number of academic collaborations. I have benefited enormously from her friendship and insight. Ellie Lee and Jan
