Preface and Acknowledgments
This book is mainly based on research done at the Rockefeller Archive Center (RAe) in North Tarrytown / Sleepy Hollow (N.Y.) in 1992 and 1998, which was funded by the RAC. The research done at that time has been complemented, and a first version of the book prepared, during longer visits to the United States (Harvard University and University of New Hampshire) from 1991 until 1994, and in 1997, when I was an international Feodor-Lynen-Fellow of the Alexander-von-HumboldtStiftung (Bonn).
