Preface Stefano Vecchio

This Chapter of the Journal of Thermal Analysis and Calorimetry is a collection of peer-reviewed papers, which were presented at the XXXIV National Congress on Calorimetry, Thermal Analysis and Applied Thermodynamics (AICAT 2012), held in Rome from 5th to 8th of June, 2012. I am sure that this special issue represents an interesting overview of the most up-dated interesting novel and traditional among the themes developed recently by scientists in the fields of calorimetry and thermal analysis. Following the tradition of previous congresses, the AICAT 2012 was jointly organized by the Italian Society for Calorimetry and Thermal Analysis (AICAT) and the Interdivisional Group of Calorimetry and Thermal Analysis of the Italian Chemical Society (GICAT). AICAT 2012 attracted more than 80 participants coming not only from Italy, but from many countries, especially from Eastern Europe (Romania, Czech Republic, Poland, Russia, Greece) but also from Turkey, Algeria, Portugal, United Kingdom, and the USA. Over 100 contributions were presented at this congress, which covered all traditional topics of calorimetry and thermal analysis (polymers and biomaterials, life science, food and pharmaceuticals, solution and applied thermodynamics, inorganic materials, kinetics, environmental and safety, and cultural heritage), and among them six plenary and six key lectures, over 70 presentations as posters and 18 as oral communications. The opening and the SETARAM-AICAT award ceremonies as well as the first plenary lecture that is

traditionally given by recipient of the SETARAM-AICAT award, took place on Tuesday 5th June at the ‘‘Casa dell’Aviatore’’, which is the Officers’ Club of the Italian Air Force. Unfortunately, the recipient of the SETARAMAICAT 2012 award, Prof. Manuel A.V. Ribeiro da Silva from the University of Porto (Portugal), could not be physically present to receive this award and to deliver his lecture that was given by Dr. Ana Filipa Lima Oso´rio Magalha˜es Santos, one of his co-workers. The excellent level of contributions presented during these 3 days and the exchange of knowledge and experiences that all participants operating in the different fields of calorimetry and thermal analysis will be able to offer contributed significantly in providing a favorable propitious atmosphere that permeated the scientific as well as the social events [welcome party, conference dinner and the guided tour at Palazzo Farnese in Caprarola (Viterbo)]. I am truly and deeply grateful to Prof. Judith Simon, Ed
