IT Strategy – Using IT for Value Creation

Preface third edition
Each company must create value, also and especially by means of IT - in this respect, since the first edition of this book has appeared, nothing has changed in recent years. New is that companies understand the relationships between IT-use and its effect on the actual business in a better way. An A.T. Kearney's study has brought up new findings from this time forward. Thereafter, the companies are indeed aware that their IT should also cover strategic aspects, but on the contrary they see themselves often more hampered than helped by IT when it comes to strategic planning. A topic, which has gained significance over the past years, is sustainability. In the discussion about IT, the expression “Green IT” is often used. While the focus here is placed solely on hardware and equipment, this book follows a broader approach: it deals not just with the perspective of system providers, but in particular with the perspective of manufacturing companies. Thus, “Green IT” can even become “Green Business.”

IT Strategy – Using IT for Value Creation

Preface: What is Strategic IT Management?
This book is based on many years of experience at A.T. Kearney in the consulting sector for strategic information technology. We see ‘strategic IT consulting’ as strategy consulting geared towards the senior executives responsible for IT; generally, the CEO or a board member responsible for IT, possibly the CIO, and sometimes a head of unit or the director of a subsidiary. ‘Strategic’ as opposed to ‘operative’ means not implementing IT but focusing completely on the issue of how added value can be created for the company by using information technology.
