Study of Virtual Learning Community on Foreign Language Teaching Xiaohua Zhu

Abstract Based on the introduction of the definitions of virtual community and virtual language learning community and the current teaching and learning situations of foreign language teachers and learners in colleges and universities, the paper puts the use of virtual community into foreign language teaching and learning and points out the advantages of them combined with the features of foreign language teaching and learning. Introduction

With the development of information and network technology, the number of the virtual community has increased at the unknown growth rate. Virtual community provide a new way of shopping, communication, and working and life for people. This new social organization has remarkable influence on each person on the traditional community [1]. Virtual community’s rapid growth and development has provided many valuable research topics, and these studies involve information technology, economics, management, psychology and other aspects. Virtual communities have also penetrated to the field of foreign language learning [2]. Virtual language learning community stemmed from the popularity of the internet. According to the China Internet Network Information Center Research Report, 36 % of the Internet users, 137 million people, have registered English websites or language communities. 14.3% of the frequently used network service is for the function of network education, and this data is increasing, that presents the developing tendency for the virtual language learning community.

Theory of Virtual Community and Virtual Learning Community

48.2.1 Virtual Community Many scholars in different points defined virtual community. Howard (1993) defined virtual community as the virtual network space with activities including the views, knowledge discussion and Emotional exchange between the participants from the perspective of temporal relationship.
