At the heart of Language Acts and Worldmaking, one of the four major projects that together constitute the AHRC-funded initiative Open World Research Initiative, is the exploration of ‘language as a material and historical force which acts as the means by which individuals construct their personal, local, transnational and spiritual identities’ (https://www.languageacts.org/about-us/our-vision/), a process which is referred to as ‘worldmaking’. This project, and more specifically one of the strands of that project entitled Diasporic Identities and the Politics of Language strand, has inspired this timely and revealing volume edited by Matilde Gallardo, which has compiled a collection of inspirational narratives and reflections from teachers of modern languages in the UK. It is important to acknowledge the particularly challenging context in which these women are working hard to encourage language learning. The long-acknowledged lack of motivation for learning other languages in the UK has for many decades stimulated innovation amongst language teachers, who have pushed the boundaries of pedagogy in an attempt to share their own enthusiasm for and joy in the
