For decades, the transformation agenda of Africa has been a mirage, largely because of the weak performance in the mainstay of African economies—agriculture. The history of Africa is well tied to its vast natural resources including fertile lands that support agricultural production. It has the potential to produce enough to feed itself and export to other continents. Unfortunately, it continues to rely on food imports and food aid from Europe and the Americas. The main reason for this is the weak agricultural commodity value chains. This is the common story across Africa and Ghana is no exception. Indeed, during the 2019/2020 cropping season, rice farmers in Ghana lamented over lack of market for their produce, a situation exacerbated by lack of storage facilities. And yet, the country spends hundreds of millions of dollars annually importing rice.
