Abstract Two species of microcotylid monogeneans, Microcotyle caudata Goto, 1894 and Microcotyle sebastisci Yamaguti, 1958, have been reported from fishes of the Sebastes inermis species complex and Sebastiscus marmoratus (Cuvier) (Scorpaeniformes: Sebastidae). So far, these parasite species have been distinguished by the size of the eggs and the number of testes, but based on morphological evidence including re-examination of the type-specimens and topotypes and molecular analysis, we consider M.

sebastisci to be a junior synonym of M. caudata. As a result, M. caudata exhibits a wide host range, seven species from three genera and two families. A new species, Microcotyle kasago n. sp., is described based on material from S. marmoratus and differentiated from other congeners by means of morphological and molecular analysis.
Introduction The black rockfish Sebastes inermis Cuvier species complex (Scorpaeniformes: Sebastidae) is found off the coasts of southern Hokkaido southward to Kyushu and is very important for commercial fisheries and sport fishing in Japan (Boehlert & Yamada, 1991). Three variations in the body colour and the morphology of the fish have been reported, but the species complex had been regarded as one species until a taxonomic review by Kai & Nakabo (2008) who divided it into three species: Sebastes inermis, Sebastes ventricosus Temminck & Schlegel and Sebastes cheni Barsukov. In general, monogeneans (Platyhelminthes) are host-specific monoxenous ectoparasites of fishes (Whittington, 1998). Five species of monogeneans have been reported in fishes of the Sebastes inermis species complex: Menziesia sebastodis (Yamaguti, 1934) [as Epibdella sebastodis and Benedenia sebastodis (see Yamaguti, 1934; Iwata, 1990)];
