Abstract Platycephalid Hyalorhynchus pellucidus Ogilby 1910 was described based on four specimens collected from the coast of Queensland, Australia, by the F.I.S. Endeavour on 1910. Although previous authors considered the four specimens to be syntypes of the species, we consider that all 78 specimens included in the species by Ogilby are syntypes. This study also points out that a similar situation is recognized in some of the other species described by the publication. This study also attempts to specify syntypes deposited in several museums. Station data are provided for "F.I.S. Endeavour" fishes from Australia. Keywords Syntypes · Endeavour · Elates ransonnettii · Published work
Introduction Ogilby (1910) described 29 new species based on specimens collected from the coast of Queensland during three cruises (cruise no. 25 from 6 to 19 July, no. 26 from 26 July to 9 August and no. 27 from 31 August to 13 September) by the F.I.S. Endeavour in 1910. In addition he named an additional species, Macrorhamphosus robustus Ogilby 1910, shortly described in key and footnote (Ogilby 1910: 91). species, Hyalorhynchus pellucidus Ogilby 1910 (Fig. 1), regarded to be a junior synonym of Elates ransonnettii (Steindachner 1876) (e.g., Paxton and Hanley 1989; Paxton et al. 2006; Fricke et al. 2020), was described based on four specimens from off Pine Peak Island and Cape Gloucester. Although several authors recognized the four specimens as syntypes (e.g., Böhlke 1953; Paxton and Hanley 1989; Fricke et al. 2020), these syntypes have not been adequately identified (see Paxton and Hanley 1989; Fricke et al. 2020), because "the type specimens (of Ogilby’s 30 new species) were forwarded to Sydney (= Australian Museum) without labels or other identification marks" (McCulloch 1914: 80) and "the types (of Ogilby’s 30 new species) were not distinguished and ascertaining which specimens are types is difficult" (Paxton and Hanley 1989: 14)
