Dear Reader, Most of the world’s automotive electronics suppliers have targeted the Chinese OEM market, the world’s largest. China accounts for 28 % of the motor vehicles built worldwide in 2019. But with political and economic tensions between the USA and China on the rise, suppliers need to consider the heightened risks. The USA is confronting China on multiple fronts. It has sanctioned pro-Chinese leaders of Hong Kong over China’s imposition of national security laws. Trade disputes are now more common as the USA confronts China over its forced technology transfers, protectionist investment barriers and thefts of intellectual property. Huawei and other Chinese tech companies have been prevented from using American technology and software. The USA won’t let Huawei participate in building its 5G network. Of course China is punching back, and the cold war between the two countries is likely to get worse. Given its deep economic ties to China, Germany has been far less confrontational. Volkswagen, Daimler and BMW make more than one-third of their profits in China. But Germany is likely to reconsider its present stance. One of China’s

Regardless of country affiliation, automotive electronics suppliers need to weigh the risks of leaning too heavily on a Chinese customer portfolio and stay watchful and resilient as the situation will likely change – for better or worse – over the coming months.
