THE MRS WELCOMES YOU TO BOSTON We Invite You To Participate Fully In The Premier Conference For Materials Professionals To old friends and new: Welcome to Boston! Registration for this year's Annual Meeting is at a record level, attracted by a particularly strong technical program and the Materials Research Society's reputation as the sponsor of the most vital information sharing event within the community of materials professionals. Many old friendships will be renewed in these few days and new ones cemented. The Society will be made stronger here and, with it, our profession as well. A meeting of this size requires the participation of an enormous number of people. All of this effort is brought into focus by the Meeting Chairmen, Gordon Pike of Sandia Labs, Bill Appleton of Oak Ridge and Bernie Kear of Exxon. We report in this issue of the Bulletin the scope of their accomplishments, but such a report cannot capture fully the scope of the task they created for themselves or the energy required to carry it out. We are, however, very greatly in their debt, for the program is excellent. This is apparent even in the symposia topics, which comprehend the most important technical issues confronting us. All of this is only one dimension, albeit a critical one, of the Boston Meeting. The human side is equally
HARRY LEAMY important. The Materials Research Society Annual Meeting brings together a unique community of scientists, engineers and technologists with shared problems and interests. The identity of our profession is defined through such meetings; practitioners of the materials research art identify each
other here, making acquaintances who become friends. We become a community through this association. In this collegial atmosphere we put faces to authorship, and our understanding of each other deepens. In short, we benefit personally and professionally, together and in equal measure. Better understanding of materials underlies contemporary technological development, and technology underlies material improvement of nations and peoples. We have chosen exciting careers at the leading edge of a knowledge explosion that is transforming the substance of human life on this planet. The Materials Research Society is proud to play a significant role in this process. I hope you will take maximum advantage of the opportunities the MRS offers. As President Elect Woody White notes elsewhere in this special edition of the Bulletin, ours is a participatory Society, and we invite you to participate most fully in its affairs. Harry Leamy
