■ The Netherlands Pharmacovigilance Centre has received six reports* of weight gain associated with clonidine use up to 1 June 2007 (reporting odds ratio [ROR] 6.3; 95% CI 2.8, 14.5); four of these involved children. The time to reaction onset ranged from 1 month to 1 year. Outcomes were detailed for two patients; both lost weight after a reduction in the clonidine dosage. Weight gain is not listed in the Dutch Summary of Product Characteristics for either brandname or generic clonidine. The Uppsala Monitoring Centre (UMC) database contains 28 reports of clonidine-associated weight gain (ROR 0.79; 0.55, 1.15). Thus, the association is "disproportionally present" in the Lareb, but not the UMC, database. * Details of these cases appear in this issue p17; 801075196 Lareb. Clonidine and weight gain.
