The idea for this book was the result of a planned social intervention aimed at encouraging social relations between two groups, which, though not in conflict, previously had had very little contact. To correct an anomaly which had existed far too long, namely, the total lack of interaction between social psychologists from Europe and Israel, a meeting had been organized under the auspices of the European Association of Experimental Social Psychology and the Israeli Association of Social Psychology that took place in a kibbutz near Tel Aviv late in 1983. The theme of the meeting was formulated very broadly as "Group processes and intergroup conflict" to allow a selection of participants on the basis of quality rather than area of research. To our surprise, this caution turned out to be unnecessary. The majority of the papers centered around the topic of conflict. Rowever, while the European work on conflict relied heavily on experimental laboratory research, most of the Israeli research consisted of field studies, which frequently focused on the Israeli-Palestini
