Preface

This edited volume is a peer-reviewed publication of latest works in the field of Science and Technology Studies (STS) that delve into the notion of resilience, and critically examine how it has grown rapidly in academic discourses, research projects, and policymaking. It is a collection of papers that aim to uncover the underlying social and technical factors that shape human capacity to endure crisis and dramatic changes and to recover from catastrophic events. The whole volume revolves around the concept of sociotechnical resilience, which is proposed as a novel framework to understand resilience as a hybrid construct. The book stemmed from a workshop held at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in June 2016. It was a two-day meeting jointly supported by NTU’s Center for Liberal Arts and Social Sciences and the Future Resilient Systems, Singapore-ETH Center. I would like to thank K.K. Luke, Liu Hong, Zhou Min, and Hans R. Heinimann for their support
