Abstract Universities can generate wider benefits on entrepreneurship development and regional competitiveness. To advance understanding of how universities impact on regional innovation and socioeconomic development, this study undertakes a comprehensive review of the book entitled “University evolution, entrepreneurial activity and regional competitiveness” by D. Audretsch, et  al. In this review, we characterize with a broad brush  of the particular role of academic institutions in the entrepreneurial activities, which is the core theme of the book. The review also informs policy thinking about how to improve entrepreneurial-oriented spirits in academic institutes. Entrepreneurship Education

The highly competitive and knowledge-based society has a higher demand for the technological innovation. Knowledge is an important driver of technological innovation and sustainable development in the long run (Hoc and Trong 2019). The book entitled “University evolution, entrepreneurial activity and regional competitiveness” underlines this point, which raises the point that knowledge is embedded in human capital. Based on this argument, the book further extends its discussion to the key role of the universities as an incubator for the society. Hence, universities significantly affect the innovation behaviors of entrepreneurial enterprises in the region. This growing influence attracts more firms to cooperate with universities for the economic benefits of innovations in the last two decades, such as close position or jointly collaboration and the like. To be more specific, the focus of concern of the book is what the role do universities play in stimulating innovation and regional development, and is there any knowledge transfer model that will fit for all universities? The book contains seven parts. In part I three case studies are used to uncover the reasons and impetus that encourage scientists to start a business, which in turn helps universities become more closely attached to the entrepreneurial activities.
