UPCOMING CONFERENCES
Nano and Bio in Society Conference to Examine the Role of Scientists in Society and the Societal Impact of Their Research www.NABISConference.com/2006 The inaugural Nano and Bio in Society (NABIS) Conference will be held March 27–30, 2006, in Chicago. The mission of NABIS is to bring top-level international scientists and other interested parties together to discuss the societal impact of specific nano and bio research and products and to explore the many roles of the scientist in modern society. The conference will feature plenary sessions, case studies, panel discussions, and invited and contributed presentations. On Tuesday, March 28, presentations will focus on the phenomenon of the scientist as entrepreneur, or “scientrepre-
neur,” featuring those who have successfully made a transition from traditional university research settings. They will share their experiences and offer advice and guidance. On March 29, presentations will examine the scientist as philosopher, along with the ethical, legal, and societal implications of research and its subsequent products. In additional to panels featuring scientists, ethicists, and journalists, individual scientists will discuss the potential impact of their research. On March 30, the role of the scientist as steward of the future will be explored and methods for effectively introducing new
and different scientific advancements into society will be discussed. Over 1000 scientists from universities, industry, and government are expected to attend. The Materials Research Society is an organizational sponsor, and MRS members will receive discounted registration. For more information, visit www. Fifth International Conference on Synchrotron Radiation in Materials Science (SRMS-5) to be Held in Chicago July 30–August 2, 2006 www.aps.anl.gov/News/Conferences/2006/SRMS The Fifth International Conference on Synchrotron Radiation in Materials Science (SRMS-5) is the next in a series of international conferences, held every two years, that bring together leading-edge synchrotron researchers in materials science. It is one of the leading events in the field, covering various aspects of materials science and engineering related to synchrotron radiation. The goal of the conference, to be held July 30–August 2, 2006, is to provide an overview of the latest research developments in a broad range of materials areas including biomaterials and polymers, electronic and photonic materials, engineering materials, nanostructures, and surfaces and interfaces as well as the instrumentation and novel techniques to perform the research. Plenary
speakers include E.J. Kramer (University of California, Santa Barbara), T.K. Sham (University of Western Ontario), H. Dosch (Max Planck Institut für Metallforschung, Stuttgart), and J.C
