Foreword

‘Emotional’ and ‘moving’ are not words one may usually associate with the process of research. In my academic career, however, I have experienced many extremes and seen the power and impact that research (and individual researchers) can have when they engage genuinely and honestly with their research communities. One of the most inspiring and moving moments of my research career took place in the small Aboriginal community of Yarrabah, a seaside town just south of Cairns in Far Northern Australia, at the culmination of a research project on which Professor Komla Tsey and I were co-leaders. Professor Tsey and I were in Yarrabah for the opening of an international mental health conference in 2006. The community was to showcase its successful suicide prevention activities, particularly the roles and contributions of Family Wellbeing and Men’s Group research. The local men’s dance group, Yabba Bimbie, performed a moving ‘research dance’ on the opening day of the conference, which involved research collaborators from James Cook University (JCU), the University of Queensland (UQ) and the Gurriny Yealamucka Health Service Aboriginal Corporation (GYHSAC).
