I am really pleased to be able to contribute this preface to Young Adolescent Engagement in Learning. The issue of ‘engagement’ is one that is of interest to many educators—myself included. However, what constitutes engagement and disengagement is often subjective and context specific. Whilst it is clear that young people who have ‘dropped out’ or been ‘pushed out’ of school, who do not complete their school work or who misbehave in class are not engaged in learning, they are not the only ones who might be considered disengaged.
