Foreword

Every thought, conceived in the flame of intuition, born in the pain of thinking, constitutes a new clearing. Where we find a cluttered or clogged situation, where we find a knotted and tangled mess, where disorder and chaos have choked all life and breathe, there we find a dead and thoughtless place. These moribund places abound in our present age in a way that is not unprecedented in kind, but is surely unique in scale. The sheer scope of the catastrophe is catastrophic. At the turn of the twentieth century, a group of modern shipbuilders using the tools of Romanticism, Existentialism, Phenomenology, Pragmatism, and Psychoanalysis built the first vessels that would sail into what would become modernity’s most violent and absurd chapter. As the saying goes, history’s repetitions come first as tragedy and second as farce. We have seen this saying play out from then to now, a century removed from the first great war. In that sequence, certain aspects stand out. Perhaps no institution has been less aware of this epochal situation—and of its own role in its absurdity—than the modern compulsory school.
