INTRODUCTION

Our

book, International Business: An

Emerging Vision (1997), contains

forty nine specially commissioned contributions by forty eight leading scholars in international business (IB) and related disciplines. These essays draw from such varied disciplines as economics, political science, organization theory, strategic management, finance, marketing, organizational behavior and ethics. They explore in a comprehensive fashion the conceptual domain of IB inquiry, and the constructs that hold promise for integrating the field and giving it direction in the near future.

Startingwith the 1950s, the introductory chapter presents a brief history of the field's development, and examines the two paradigms that have guided much of this inquiry. It also introduces a new paradigm that we believe would enrich IB inquiry by shifting attention away from the firm as the central unit of analysis to a more comprehensive multilevel, hierarchical view of the international business process. It would also focus attention on the emergent nature of this process; thus the sub-title for the book. The concluding chapter examines what we believe are the implications of the new paradigmfor the future
