Abstract A new species of Pseudostomella is described from sublittoral sands of the southern coast of Bahia State, Brazil. Pseudostomella squamalongispinosa sp. nov. is 310–320 μm long and is distinguished from its congeners by the following autapomorphies: presence of pentancre scales from the middle of the body to the pedicles, with the central ancre longer than the other four, and 19 pairs of dorsolateral adhesive tubes, including two pairs in the pharyngeal region (plus two clubshaped tubes) and up to 17 pairs in the trunk, and one pair of posterior dorsolateral adhesive tubes. Keywords State of Bahia . Biodiversity . Taxonomy . Meiofauna . Macrodasyida

Introduction The genus Pseudostomella is characterized by the peculiar preoral apparatus. It was originally described from France by Swedmark (1956). It is a member of the Thaumastodermatidae,

the largest and most diverse family of macrodasyidan Gastrotricha (Hochberg 2002; Todaro et al. 2011). There are 15 described species of Pseudostomella worldwide, plus one described—however not formally named— species from Somalia (see Valbonesi and Luporini 1984; also Todaro 2012). To date, three species are known from the Nearctic (P. cataphracta Ruppert 1970, P. plumosa Ruppert 1970, P. triancra Hummon 2008), one from the Neotropics (P. dolichopoda Todaro 2012), three from the Palearctic (P. roscovita Swedmark 1956, P. etrusca Hummon, Todaro and Tongiorgi 1993, P. faroensis Clausen 2040), six from the Oriental region (P. malayica Renaud-Mornant 1967, P. indica Rao 1970, P. andamanica Rao 1993, P. koreana Lee and Chang 2002, P. longifurca Lee and Chang 2002, P. cheraensis Priyalakshmi, Menon and Todaro 2007) and two from Australasia (P. klauserae Hochberg 2002, P. megapalpator Hochberg 2002). In the present study we describe a new species of Pseudostomella found during a meiofaunal survey along the southern coast of the State of Bahia, Brazil. The finding of a new marine Macrodasyida from Brazil will help to better understand the diversity and biogeography patterns of this taxon, as very few faunistic surveys have been conducted in Brazil (T
